GYROS AND ACCELEROMETERS

FAA CERTIFIED REPAIR STATION

Gyro and Accelerometer Repair and Testing

Gyros and accelerometers are sensors commonly used in aircraft avionics and other systems to measure and provide information about the aircraft’s orientation, motion and acceleration. These systems/instruments are crucial when flying without outside visual references, such as in clouds, bad weather or at night.

AESG provides testing and repair services for the three main gyroscopic instruments found on aircraft:

  • Artificial horizon or attitude indicator – displays pitch and roll angles of the aircraft relative to the horizon.
  • Heading indicator or directional gyro – displays the magnetic heading of the aircraft.
  • Turn coordinator or turn and slip indicator – displays rate and direction of the aircraft’s turn.

AESG specializes in comprehensive services to repair, overhaul, and refurbish gyroscopic and accelerometric instruments/systems used on fixed-wing, rotary-wing and unmanned aircraft.

Gyros and accelerometer repair services include:

Perform functional testing of gyroscopic or accelerometric instruments/systems. testing may require that the Gyro or accelerometer  be taken apart for the purpose of evaluating why it is not operating properly. This information is to determine if an item can be repaired at a cost that is viable to the owner/user of the item.

Develop automated test procedures and systems as necessary. Gyroscopic and accelerometric systems require external stimulation to test functionality of the item and, to run the item continuously over a period.  For this, it is necessary to develop automated test procedures that can run with no input or minimal input from humans.

Over time systems and the parts needed to keep items operational go out of production.  To keep these items in service, it is necessary to identify options for replacing the various parts and systems in advance.  Sometimes this means buying and stocking parts, mitigate potential issues repairing items before it is critical.  In other cases, it is necessary to develop form, fit and function replacements for the parts/systems that can no longer be repaired.

Accelerometer and Gyro Repairs

Accelerometer and Gyro Repair and Testing Solutions

Gyros and accelerometers are often used together in inertial sensors to provide comprehensive information about an aircraft’s motion and orientation. In aviation, these sensors contribute to the overall avionics system, helping pilots maintain control, providing data for navigation, and enhancing safety.

The information from gyros and accelerometers is crucial for systems like autopilots, navigation systems, and flight control systems. Trust your testing and repair to AESG.

Comprehensive Gyros and accelerometer repair and testing

  • Gyroscopes (Gyros):

Gyroscopes (Gyros): Gyroscopes are devices that measure the rate of rotation or angular velocity around a specific axis.

    Types of Gyros we repair:

    • Mechanical Gyros: Traditional gyroscopes with spinning masses.
    • Ring Laser Gyros (RLG): Use laser beams to detect changes in orientation.
    • Fiber Optic Gyros (FOG): Rely on the interference of light in optical fibers to measure rotation.

  • Accelerometers:

Accelerometers measure the rate of change of velocity or acceleration along a specific axis.

    Types of Accelerometers we repair:

    • Piezoelectric Accelerometers: Generate electrical charge in response to mechanical stress.
    • MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) Accelerometers: Tiny devices with microscale components.
